How popular is Warhammer Fantasy in your area?

I'm lucky to get to play it anymore, as most of our players vanished or sold their life to WoW.

That being said, I own a great deal of Chaos Mortals and Daemons, as well as More Orcs and Goblins than GW has in it's warehouse.

How about you guys? Do you actually play Fantasy or do you just buy models?

We had a GW store for about 5 years (it closed in Jan, 09). During the GW store's open period the local indie stores selling GW products went down in numbers, stocking less. Those stores cut back on sponsoring GW GDs local tournies etc.

Those indies started to carry "other" minies. Warmachine, SST, FoW, etc, etc.
Those indies are still into "other products" now that GW has bailed out of town (they have that new plan???) the indies DID NOT step up stocking GW goodies. Someday....maybe they will??

These days......people get together at the indies to play (they are longtime players/customers of the indies) I know a fair number of GW players, well more like EX- GW systems users. Still and all, a lot of wargaming is not in stores. 40K is still played......by older players(adults). ACW, WWII, ECW, Ancients (several periods)....well...the hobby of wargaming is alive and well AND growing in the St.Louis, Mo. area.

There are a goodly number of non-GW wargames rule systems, including fantasy rules.

WOW! I can't even remeber the last time I played Fantasy. I had several armies Goblin wolf riders, Beastmen and more Empire than well the empire itself. I never won many games but I did have fun.
Now when I want my fantasy fix, I play LOTR War or the Rings.

Yeah, I'm still an active collector of WHFB, but I don't get to play as much as I used to (or would like to). :(

The FLGS I used to frequent had a very active gaming club numbering 30-40 people. There were enough people involved, and their tastes in gaming wide-ranging enough, that you could find someone to play just about any game you could name. WHFB was actually the most popular game among the adult members of the club, while WH40K was the most popular among the teenagers (although there was certainly a fair amount of cross-over between the two age groups).

Unfortunaly, the store had to close due to financial problems that had nothing to do with the store itself (the owner was involved in several other buisness ventures, the game store was something of a sideline for him). After the store closed, the group just seemed to drift apart and I eventually moved away.

This past week, I talked to some of my longtime, old fart opponent. No plans for any GW fantasy games for the rest of this year.

Before the normal yearly GW's price hike (2009) one old fart and I started accumulating Lizardman armies. Just us, other opponents weren't that interested in our plans. Soooo "someday" we will be locking horns Lizzie to lizzie armies.

We game two, three times a week. One opponent does still play 40K!!! My group and I are into WAB, FoG and most recently.....1644 (ECW) by R. Priestley. WE also are into WWII. A couple of the guys do FoW......mainly we do Blitskreig(spelling??)

To cut it short.....do people "still" play GW's systems??

We are going to start a new Campaign in January. We play about twice a month now but it sometimes is more.

Crazy...since I posted this, I've played a dozen fantasy games...including a 12,000 point Halloween mad house.

I guess all I need to do is speak the words, the and gates of the fantasy world open!

I've been running Chaos Mortals, and minus the random missing daemon unit, I am really enjoying them.

Need to buy a Hell Cannon though...

I still play! Though, like most people, not as often as I would like. I played my Brets vs a Khorne Daemon army a couple of weekends ago, and STOMPED the ever-livin' bejeezus out of them, specifically because my Damsel spent the entire game casting Mistress of the Marsh on the Bloodcrusher unit, and I never got into combat with them. Win! :) They would have swallowed me whole and spat me back out, I imagine...

I paint much more often than I play, as that is what I have been doing for much longer. I paint more than just GW models, though. I just like painting minis, in general. :)

I played from around 1988/1989-around 2003 like mad. Then the fantasy miniature world really expanded and I started trying other things like Confrontation and Warmachine. Over the last couple of years I have diverted mostly to Historicals (however I use Warhammer Historicals so its still GW and Warhammer). I played ONE game of 7th edition and have eyballed the new book some but after so many years of playing and collecting the armies and setting just isnt as interesting as it once was. Funny because I still really love the 40k setting after 20 years of gaming. I still really love the Warhammer mechanic and really like WAB I am just more interested in Historical armies and event now that I have gotten older for some reason than fantasy worlds. Although I am still always tempted by the latest edition of say Warmachine or Isle of Blood or anything with a bunch of cool figures.

a little necro but we just started playing 8th edition locally with some good effect.

we had almost 10 games going last play night and I know of 4 or 5 others that happened in association with our league.

We have a nice 14 person league going right now, using modified Mighty Empires and 8th edition rules. It's awesome to see more fantasy players than 40K players! :D
